Kurt Schietzel

Kurt Schietzel (born September 25, 1933 ) is a German prehistorian .

Kurt Schietzel was the son of Carl Schietzel and his wife Thyra Elisabeth Möller. He studied in Hamburg and Cologne. In 1961 he received his doctorate from Hermann Schwabedissen in Cologne . In 1962/63 he held a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , with which he traveled to the Balkans, the Middle East and Egypt. From 1963 he was head of the department for Viking research and the excavations in Haithabu (in the Schleswig State Museum).

From 1983 until his retirement in 1998, Kurt Schietzel was the managing director of the Schleswig State Archaeological Museum ( Gottorf Castle ). He was the founder of the Viking Museum Haithabu and the first editor of the series Reports on the excavations in Haithabu . He is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute .

In 1984 he was awarded the honorary professorship of the State of Schleswig -Holstein "in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding services to research in regional history, in particular during the excavation of the early medieval settlement Haithabu, to cultivate culture in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and to promote German-Scandinavian relations" Holstein and in 2002 received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
