controversy

In 1986 it became known that Vajen, as incumbent mayor, had manipulated the local elections in Brockel in several cases. He had given two grandfathers postal ballot papers for their grandchildren and persuaded them to vote on behalf of the young voters. Ernst Albrecht , Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, nevertheless did not part with his MP in order not to endanger the unanimous majority of the CDU and FDP. Even after Vajen was stopped by police officers on August 16, 1987 at night with two per thousand alcohol in his blood and he defended himself against them, Albrecht held on to him. Vajen was fined 18,000 marks in 1988 and had to surrender his driver's license for nine months.

On September 2, 1989, the CDU parliamentary group in Lower Saxony separated from Member of Parliament Kurt Vajen after several scandals, which resulted in the loss of the parliamentary majority in the state parliament. The SPD politician Oswald Hoch , who had recently moved up , announced his exit from the SPD parliamentary group and, as a non-attached MP Ernst Albrecht, secured a majority of 78 votes (CDU / FDP) to 77 votes (SPD Greens) until the end of the legislative period in June 1990.
