Kwale and Likoni (IMO 9522386) are two ferries builtin Germany by Kenya Ferry Services . In Kenya in the Mombasa District, they connect theisland city of Mombasa with the mainland.

General data

The structurally identical ferries were built in 2008 and 2009 at the Dresden shipyard in Laubegast at a price of 5.9 million euros each . The keel laying of both ships was on August 22, 2008, the launch and christening took place on November 11, 2009. The ferries to Kwale , a small town 30 kilometers southwest of Mombasa, and Likoni , a division in the Mombasa District are named. The ships left the shipyard in Dresden on February 25, 2010. They were loaded onto the Beluga Singapore in the Port of Hamburg at the beginning of May and arrived in Mombasa at the beginning of June 2010.

Technical specifications

Kwale and Likoni are free-moving double-ended ferries with ramps at either end. The wheelhouse is on the side above the deck. The ferries have a total length of 75.0 meters, a width of 16.28 meters and load a draft of 1.9 meters. The side height is 3 meters. Each ferry can carry up to 60  passenger cars or 1550 people. They are driven by two Caterpillar - diesel engines , with a capacity of 287 kilowatts via a shaft a Z-Drive drive.

Ferry connection

The state-owned Kenya Ferry Services operates two ferry lines in Mombasa with five ships. Four ferries operate on the Likoni Canal between Mombasa Island and Likoni, one connects Mombasa Island with Mtongwe at peak hours in the morning and evening . An average of 170,000 passengers and 3,000 vehicles are transported every day. Kwale and Likoni are to replace the two oldest, 41 and 36 year old ferries.
