The Kwenge ( Portuguese Cuengo ) is a river in the province of Bandundu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , which belongs to the Congo Basin , the catchment area of ​​the Congo .

The Kwenge has its source in Angola , then flows north through the provinces of Kwango and Kwilu . North of the city of Lusanga , formerly Leverville , it flows into the Kwilu River , which in turn flows into the Kasai further north of the city of Bandundu . In the lower reaches of the river, large parts of the river valley are periodically or permanently flooded.

The land between Kwilu and Kwenge was originally settled by the Pende . They are known for their face masks, which can be worn like helmets, and which are intended to add amusement to the onlookers at certain festivities.

On the upper reaches of the Kwenge and Bakali , members of the Suku settled in the savannah in the early 19th century .
