Lunda Norte is a province in the African state of Angola . It has around 1 million inhabitants (2019 estimate) on an area of ​​102,782 km². The capital of the province is Dundo .

geography

The province of Lunda Norte is located in the far northeast of Angola, about 500 km east of the capital Luanda . It borders in the north and east on the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in the south on the province of Lunda Sul and in the west on the province of Malanje .

Small areas in the north and west of the province are covered with wet savannah , but most of the area is dry savannah . Remains of tropical rainforest can only be found in the Cassai river valley . The largest rivers are Cuango in the west, Cuilo in the center and Cassai in the east of the province.

history

The former colonial district of Lunda was divided into the new districts of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul on July 13, 1895 by the Portuguese colonial administration . On July 4, 1978, the Lunda Norte District was also renamed Lunda Norte Province. Lucapa remained the capital until Dundo became the provincial seat of government in 2013.

The province of Lunda Norte is divided into nine districts ( Municípios ), which are further divided into 25 municipalities (Comunas). The provincial capital has been Dundo (previously Lucapa) since 2013 . The 2014 census showed 862,566 inhabitants, the estimate for 2019 is 1,001,000 inhabitants.

economy

One of the main agricultural products in Lunda Norte is cotton , which is mainly grown in the valleys of Cuango and Cuilo. In addition, rice , corn and cassava are produced for their own use. The province is rich in diamond deposits . The most important are around Canzar in the far north-east and around Lucapa . Individual diamonds over 100 carats are also more commonly found in the latter area. The largest diamond ever discovered in Angola of 404 carats with a value of around 18 million euros was also found there in February 2016.

In 2016 there were 10 projects in Lunda Norte where diamonds were industrially mined. They employed 3334 workers. In the same year, the government issued a further 301 licenses to cooperatives of one hectare each for the semi-industrial and artisanal exploration of diamonds, in which 2434 young Angolans are organized to fight poverty in the province. For decades, diamonds have been mined there under informal conditions by so-called garimpeiros , most of whom come from the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The resulting environmental damage is manifold. The government has been taking action since 2017 with the "Operation Transparency".

After a statement by the Foreign Office of the Federal Government of industrial and informal resource extraction lead in the provinces of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul to significant human rights violations in the affected regions.

The main road from Luanda to Lubumbashi in the Copperbelt crosses the province in the western part.
