Noise instruments are devices that are used to generate noise .

Noise instruments were or are mainly used in cultic or folk customs (e.g. driving out ghosts ), in driven hunts , and generally to arouse attention. In Austria, ratcheting is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage . They are also often used as toy instruments by children. It is also widely used at sporting events, especially in football stadiums. In historical military music (e.g. music of the Janissaries) they play a major role, partly to encourage soldiers or to intimidate the enemy.

Examples of noise instruments are: bell , horn , nag , Kuhglocke , blowouts (also Blasrolle or blowouts-Tröte ), free Mirliton (comb bubbles), ratchet , triangle , whistle , whistle , large drum , the South African Vuvzela as well as plates and pot lid. Even igniting fireworks, shooting cannons at the birth of royal children or for the birthday of the British Queen, shooting salutes and ringing bells are all part of it.

The transition from noise to musical instruments is fluid, as percussion and effect instruments , e.g. B. the recorder head, can be used to generate noise. Conversely, many noise instruments, e.g. B. the whistle, also play rhythms . This makes them partly suitable for early musical education .

Noise instruments can usually be played immediately without any previous musical knowledge; In addition, many small noise instruments such as air trunks, whistles and horns are often very inexpensive. These properties contribute to its high prevalence, especially among children. The whistle is certainly the most common noise instrument among children. Air trunks are also very popular, especially at carnival. As a horn resp. Compressed air horns are also used to describe instruments that fans use to cheer on teams at football matches and that can be extremely loud. Due to the very high volume, it makes sense to use earplugs when playing for long periods of time .
