Léon Bouthillier, Comte de Chavigny et de Busençais (born March 28, 1608 in Paris , † October 11, 1652 ibid) was a French politician and diplomat . From March 18, 1632 to June 23, 1643 he held the post of French Foreign Minister .

Life

Léon Bouthillier was the son of Claude Bouthillier . He became a councilor in the Parliament of Paris at an early age and, as a favorite of Cardinal Richelieu, was soon a councilor of state. His father was promoted to Foreign Minister of France in 1629 and in the following years Léon accompanied him on his diplomatic journeys across Europe. Thereby he learned the diplomatic service. From 1631 Bouthillier was entrusted by Richelieu with his own diplomatic missions in Italy. In the summer of 1632 he succeeded his father in his office, which he held until 1643. Under his leadership, among other things, the important alliance treaties with the United Netherlands and the Kingdom of Sweden came about, which decisively influenced the outcome of the Thirty Years' War . After the death of Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIII. However, like his father, he lost all his offices under the regent Anna of Austria , although he was named in the will of Louis XIII. as a member of the Regency Council had been appointed (as was his father). Nevertheless, he soon represented France in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia in Munster . On his return he intrigued against Cardinal Jules Mazarin without success and was therefore arrested twice during the Fronde .

His daughter Marie Bouthillier de Chavigny married César III on May 4, 1699 . Auguste de Choiseul de Plessis-Praslin . The marriage remained childless.
