Léon Cantave (* 1910 , † 1967 ) was a Haitian general , politician and president of Haiti .

biography

Cantave joined the Haitian army ( Forces Armées d'Haïti ), in which rose to general and chief of the general staff. After the resignation of Franck Sylvain , he became his successor on April 1, 1957 for the first time President of Haiti. Five days later, on April 6, 1957, he passed power to a thirteen-member government executive council.

Six weeks later, however, on May 20, 1957, he again took over the post of President of Haiti himself, after which the government council intended to remove him and Colonel Pierre Armand, the then police chief of Port-au-Prince, from their posts. Another five days later, on May 25, 1957, he handed over the presidency to Daniel Fignolé . He then resigned voluntarily from the post of commander-in-chief of the army, after Fignolé intended to transfer this post to Colonel Antonio Thrasybule Kebreau .

In July 1963, together with Lieutenant Colonel René Léon from the Dominican Republic, he attempted to overthrow the dictator François Duvalier . On August 7, 1963, Port-au-Prince was besieged , where President Duvalier was hiding in his presidential palace. Over several weeks he fought several skirmishes with the regular Haitian army until he finally suffered a serious defeat on September 22, 1963 when attempting to capture the barracks of Ouanaminthe . He was then imprisoned in the Dominican Republic until he finally went into exile in New York City in 1964 .
