Pierre-Eustache Daniel Fignolé (born November 11, 1913 in Pestel, † August 27, 1986 in Port-au-Prince ) was a Haitian politician and President of Haiti .

biography

Fignolé, who came from a liberal family and whose grandfather was already a senator , worked as a teacher after completing his studies. After the revolution of January 1946, he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Chambre des Deputés ), to which he belonged until 1957. Due to his age, he was unable to run for the 1946 presidential election. From August to October 1946 he was a brief member of the government of Dumarsais Estimé as Minister of Education .

He was one of the first to start organizing unions in Haiti, such as the Mouvement Ouvrier Paysan ( Peasant Movement), popularly known as "The Steamroller" during the Revolution. In April 1947 he was the founder of the Syndicats des Ouvriers et Travailleurs (union of printers and workers). In March 1948 the Union National des Travailleurs Haitien was founded .

Fignolé became Provisional President of Haiti after the resignation of General Léon Cantave on May 25, 1957 . Just three weeks later, on June 14, 1957, he was replaced by General Antonio Thrasybule Kebreau .

He then left Haiti and went into exile in the USA , where he lived temporarily in New York City and critically dealt with the political situation in Haiti, especially after the beginning of the dictatorship of François Duvalier , whom he still had from the time together in the movement the farm worker (MOP) knew. Only after the fall of Duvalier's son Jean-Claude Duvalier in February 1986 did he return to Haiti, where he died a few months later.
