Léon Ernest Gauthier (born September 27, 1912 in La Chaux-de-Fonds , Neuchâtel ; † December 13, 2003 in Biel ) was the Christian Catholic Bishop of Switzerland from 1972 to 1986 .

Life

After studying theology from 1931 to 1936 at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern , he was ordained a priest in 1936 and married Erna Herzog in the same year. In 1955 Gauthier obtained his licentiate in ecumenical theology in Geneva and then worked 1937–1972 as pastor of the parish of Saint-Germain in Geneva and 1940–1972 in Lancy - Carouge . During this time he worked as episcopal vicar from 1955 to 1972 and was elected bishop of the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland by the National Synod in 1972, which he remained until 1986.

Internationally, he represented his church in 1961 at the 3rd assembly of the World Council of Churches in New Delhi. Later as bishop he became secretary of the International Old Catholic Bishops' Conference and co- chair of the Mixed Orthodox-Old Catholic Theological Commission. Gauthier, who greatly promoted ecumenism , published numerous articles in ecclesiastical and theological journals.
