Léonce Jore

Léonce Jore (born May 21, 1882 in Madagascar , † September 29, 1975 in Vevey ; full name: Léonce Alphone Noël Henri Jore ) was a French colonial official. He was governor of Niger , Senegal and New Caledonia and high commissioner for the Pacific .

Life

Léonce Jores' father, who died in Senegal in 1885, was a purser , his grandfather a control officer in the French naval and colonial administration. Léonce Jore began his professional career in French West Africa . From 1904 to 1906 he was first deputy district administrator of Bamako , then acting district commander of Kita . From 1907 to 1908 he worked as the private secretary of Victor Ballot , the governor of Guadeloupe . Then Jore returned to Africa and initially lived in Fatick . He took over the post of district commander of Dagana before working for the Directorate of Administrative and Political Affairs of the Governor General of French West Africa from 1909 to 1914 . In 1911 Jore made his doctorate in political and economic science at the University of Paris . After living in Ivory Coast from 1918 to 1919 , he became a control officer for the French High Commission for Syria and Lebanon , where he was entrusted with numerous missions.

Léonce Jore was appointed governor of the Niger colony in 1923. He took over this office temporarily from Jules Brévié until 1925 . In 1926 Jore became governor of Senegal. In 1930 he was commissioned to build a functioning administration in French Oceania . He then took over provisional government affairs in New Caledonia (1932) and Madagascar (1933). He held his last political offices as Governor of New Caledonia and as High Commissioner for the Pacific. Leonce Jore published a number of writings on colonial subjects and in 1962 became a member of the Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer .
