The Löbenberg is a mountain in the rather flat landscape between Leipzig and Torgau . It is located about 2 km northwest of Hohburg in the Saxon hill country. Although its height is only 240 m, it was nevertheless used as a winter sports facility with the remains of an old toboggan run. The mountain can be seen from afar. It forms the heart of a conservation area , linked to the nature reserve Little Mountain to the recreation area Hohburger mountains (also Hohburger Switzerland called).

Origin and geology

Like the other mountains in the Hohburg area, the Löbenberg, the highest of these elevations, is of volcanic origin. Its age is estimated to be around 280 million years. During the Ice Ages, the hilltop was ground down to its current round shape. It consists mostly of quartz porphyry , which was quarried in several quarries from the mid-19th century to the early 1960s as a material for paving stones and for use as gravel.
