Paul Platen

Max Paul Platen (born September 26, 1890 in Eilenburg , † August 17, 1964 in Leipzig ) was a German geographer and local researcher .

Life

Paul Platen was the son of the teacher and cantor Max Platen and Margarethe born. Geissler. After attending a community school and secondary school in his hometown, he began studying geography at the University of Leipzig . In 1913 he was awarded the title of Dr. Eilenburg with his work Die Herrschaft Eilenburg from the Colonization Period to the End of the Middle Ages: A Contribution to Settlement Studies and the Constitutional History of the Eastern Central Midlands. phil. PhD. Building on this work, the work History of the City of Eilenburg and its Surroundings was published in 1923 in collaboration with the Eilenburg superintendent Wilhelm Büchting as an important standard work on Eilenburg's local history to this day .

Platen initially worked as a teacher, most recently senior teacher in Leipzig, later became senior director of studies at the Leibniz School in Leipzig. This was followed by a job at the University of Leipzig in the training of teachers in the subject of geography until 1946. In 1953 he received a teaching position in the subject of geography at the Leipzig University. In the same year he was a founding member of the Geographical Society of the GDR and from then on belonged to its board. In 1957 he took over the scientific and editorial support of the regional geography information service at the German Institute for Regional Geography , where he published more than 3000 recessions. In the 1950s, two travel guides he wrote were published by the Bibliographisches Institut FA Brockhaus . Various of his scientific writings were incorporated in 1998 in the publication On the history of settlements in the Leipzig area from the yearbook series for historical regional studies and cultural area research .

Platen died in Leipzig in 1964 at the age of 73. His estate, which includes manuscripts on historical personalities and regional customers of Europe and Asia as well as working materials on the history and geography of Saxony and the Bitterfeld region, is in the possession of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig.
