Lion of Judas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lion of Judah finds its origin in the Genesis of the Hebrew Bible ( Old Testament ), in which the Israelite tribe of Judah has a lion as its symbol.

Leo Judas and Judaism

The lion of Judas on the coat of arms of Jerusalem

In Judaism , the biblical Judah (in Hebrew: Yehuda ) is the namesake of the tribe of Judah, which is traditionally symbolized with a lion. In Genesis 49,9 LUT the ancestor Jacob speaks of his son Judah as a Gur Aryeh (Hebrew for: "young lion") when he blesses him. In the case of Jewish naming, the Hebrew name and its substitute are traditionally combined into a pair, as in this case.

Through the connection of the lion to the tribe of Judah, which is considered the most powerful tribe among the ancient Israelite tribes , the legendary descendants of the kingdom of Judah , Judea and the modern Jews , variations and translations of the word "lion" are often synonymous among Jews used for Judah ( Yehuda ). An example of this is the name of Rabbi Yehuda Loew ben Bezalel . Loew is the Yiddish word for "lion". The popular and modern Hebrew name Arieh (also Ari or Aryeh) means “lion”.

Leo Judas in Christianity

In Christian tradition the lion is called to represent Jesus . Many Christian organizations and ministries use the Judas lion as their emblem or even in their name.

The text passage appears in the New Testament , in the Revelation of John (5.5 LUT ): “And one of the elders said to me: Don't cry! Behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has overcome it to open the book and its seven seals. "

Georg Philipp Telemann created the cantata for the Michaelmas Festival , long ascribed to Johann Sebastian Bach , See, it has overcome ( BWV 219, TVWV 1: 1328).

In Heinrich von Herzogenberg's Die Passion (op. 93) this is the comforting answer to the death of Jesus: “Don't cry! Behold, the lion that is of the family of Judah has overcome it. The lamb that is slain is worthy to receive honor, praise and praise. Amen. "(No. 31, choir)

The use of a lion in Clive Staples Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia as a messianic figure is seen as a possible link to this part of Revelation.

The Lion of Judah in the Ethiopian tradition

The emperors of Ethiopia called themselves the "Victorious Lion of Judah", in Ge'ez : Mo`a 'Anbessa Ze'imnegede Yihuda . The expressions “God's chosen” and “Victorious Lion of Judah” are not - as is often assumed , for example in publications about Emperor Haile Selassie - part of the coronation title, but part of a creed with which the Ethiopian emperors traditionally introduced their letters.

Representations of a crowned lion of Judah were mainly for the Ethiopian imperial family, sometimes also for the empire of Abyssinia . The lion of Judah was depicted on coats of arms, flags, stamps, coins, and monuments and occasionally frames inscriptions on both sides, for example at the entrance to the Kidane Mihiret Church in Jerusalem .

The Lion of Judah among the Rastafarians

For the Rastafari , the former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie is known as the "Lion of Judah". They believe in the Ethiopian legend, according to which he is the direct descendant of Menelik, the son of King Solomon from the Israelite tribe of Judah and the Queen of Sheba . They saw in the emperor a messianic figure who is mentioned as the "lion of Judah" in the Revelation of John.

The subject of the "Lion of Judah" is also addressed in the 1992 song Iron Lion Zion by Bob Marley .
