Lion of Judas
The lion of Judah finds its origin in the Genesis of the Hebrew Bible ( Old Testament ), in which the Israelite tribe of Judah has a lion as its symbol.

In Judaism , the biblical Judah (in Hebrew: Yehuda ) is the namesake of the tribe of Judah, which is traditionally symbolized with a lion. In Genesis 49,9 LUT the ancestor Jacob speaks of his son Judah as a Gur Aryeh (Hebrew for: "young lion") when he blesses him. In the case of Jewish naming, the Hebrew name and its substitute are traditionally combined into a pair, as in this case.

In Christian tradition the lion is called to represent Jesus . Many Christian organizations and ministries use the Judas lion as their emblem or even in their name.

The Lion of Judah among the Rastafarians
For the Rastafari , the former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie is known as the "Lion of Judah". They believe in the Ethiopian legend, according to which he is the direct descendant of Menelik, the son of King Solomon from the Israelite tribe of Judah and the Queen of Sheba . They saw in the emperor a messianic figure who is mentioned as the "lion of Judah" in the Revelation of John.
