Līvāni (historically: Lievenhof after the Lieven family ) is a city in southeastern Latvia at the confluence of the Dubna River into the Daugava . This is where the A6 road runs from Daugavpils to the capital Riga . The city is located in the historic Latgale countryside .
history
The place got its name after the Lievenhof founded in 1553. The old manor now houses an EU-funded cultural center on the history of handicrafts in the Līvāni area.
The city's economic boom began with the opening of the Riga - Dünaburg railway line in 1861. This was stopped abruptly in the First World War when the city was on the front line for two and a half years .
In the Soviet period after the Second World War , Līvāni was an industrial city with a large glass factory , which, after its privatization in 1992, was mainly used for export to Western Europe and the USA under the name Lettglas . The company stopped production after bankruptcy in 2008. The attached small glass museum is still operated by the city of Līvāni.
There are two primary and two secondary schools in Līvāni.
Līvānu novads
As part of an administrative reform, the city formed an administrative community (Līvānu novads) with two rural communities in 1999, which three other communities joined in 2009. In 2010, 14046 inhabitants were registered.
