The L-bayonet (English: “ L-Mount ”) defines a mechanical and digital interface between the camera housing and lens.

development

The corresponding digital camera system was developed by Leica Camera AG and used for the first time in a product for the Leica TL system with image sensor in APS-C format in April 2014 . The Leica SL system for full-frame cameras has also been using this bayonet since 2015. Lens adapters for the L bayonet are available from other manufacturers .

Since 2018, the L-bayonet has also been used for full-frame cameras from Sigma and Panasonic . This L-bayonet alliance was announced at the photokina trade fair in September 2018 . It is a non-open Leica industry standard that other partners can join.

Technical specifications

The L-bayonet has an inside diameter of 51.6 millimeters and a flange focal length of 20.0 millimeters. The image circle with a diameter of 43.3 millimeters and the aspect ratio (3: 2) correspond to those of the small picture format with an image width of 36 millimeters and an image height of 24 millimeters.

The mechanical lens connection is designed as a lens bayonet with four lugs . The power supply from the camera housing for the interchangeable lens and the digital data exchange between the lens and the camera housing are accomplished via ten electrical contacts in the upper area of the bayonet opening.

Since 2015, Leica has also been offering the Leica SL model with a full-frame sensor. The successor model SL2 has also been available since 2019.

With the announcement of the L alliance at Photokina, Panasonic and Sigma made announcements. Panasonic's Lumix DC-S1, Lumix DC-S1R and Lumix DC-S1H camera housings have been available from Panasonic since 2019, and Sigma is offering the Sigma fp camera housing.

Lenses

The L-bayonet is available in two versions, an APS-C variant and a full-format variant . Leica L lenses are mechanically and electronically compatible.

APS-C

Leica T / TL lenses illuminate an APS-C sensor surface. The L-bayonet variant is not protected against dust or splash water.

Full format

Leica SL lenses are designed for sensors in 35mm format. The only difference to the APS-C variant is an additional, external seal in the SL bayonet on the lens side. The lenses of the two systems are compatible with each other.

Panasonic has announced three full format lenses from his series Lumix S: a bright standard lens with normal focal length (50 mm / 1.4), a standard zoom lens (24-105 mm) and a telephoto zoom lens (70-200 mm).

In February 2019, Sigma announced eleven high-speed lenses with a fixed focal length between 14 and 135 millimeters focal length range, with further lenses to follow.

Lens adapter

For the Leica L bayonet, lens adapters from Leica for the M , S and R bayonet are available. There are also adapters from other manufacturers such as Novoflex . Sigma offers lens adapters from Canon EF and from Sigma SA to the L-bayonet on the camera body.
