Peter Laube (born February 20, 1942 in Petershagen near Berlin , † October 28, 1988 in Leipzig ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter and training as a skilled worker for arable and crop production, Peter Laube carried out various activities, including in the book trade. From 1965 to 1968 he studied at the technical college for booksellers in Leipzig (today part of the college for technology, economy and culture ). Although he then held a secure position in the wholesale book trade , he studied at the University of Graphic and Book Art (HGB) in Leipzig from 1969 to 1974 , with Werner Tübke and Rolf Kuhrt , among others . From 1975 to 1978 he was a master student with the book designer Albert Kapr . In the period that followed, Peter Laube worked as a freelance member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , primarily as an illustrator in Leipzig.

In 1967 he married Dagmar Hilse in Friedersdorf near Berlin.

The result of his all too short creative period includes numerous oil paintings , watercolors , woodcuts , pen drawings and etchings .

In 1978, Wolfgang U. Schütte wrote about Laube's graphic:

The superficial, striking, screaming is not for Laube anyway, he prefers the ironic, the subtle. In his mostly small-format drawings and etchings - these are the most welcome techniques for him - he can let his love of detail run free, if not unbridled. The advantage of his work is a quiet, unobtrusive humor ... "

Peter Laube's great love was the book. He created the illustrations for more than 50 books . For him, illustrating was "writing on". In his thesis you can already find:

For me, writing on in the pictorial sense is of great importance because it does not seal or wall up literature, but leaves room for imagination, for productive reading and viewing. "

Rita Jorek referred to him in this context as a "picture writer". Among other things, he illustrated:
