Illustration 63

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Illustration 63 is the name of a specialist magazine for book illustration .

It serves as an art forum and at the same time as an advertising medium for book illustration.

history

In November 1963, the publisher Curt Visel from Memmingen first founded the Verlag Illustration 63 , which was later renamed Verlag Curt Visel and finally Edition Curt Visel . The focus of the publishing work of Edition Curt Visel is the artistically designed book - a little noticed and underestimated art form . With the trade journal, which also bears the name Illustration 63, Curt Visel has set himself the goal of documenting and promoting book culture. Since the publishing house was founded, it has appeared three times a year in the same guise . The very low circulation , which rose from 100 in the first issue to 400 in the 2nd year and has been 700 since the 16th year, means high production costs per single copy if it is appropriately well equipped. The rather high price of the magazine should be justified by adding four original graphics.

Meaning & effect

The magazine opened up the circle of buyers for illustrated books: They were friends of beautiful books , book collectors , book artists, publishers, antiquarians and also libraries .

Visel was able to maintain a very personal bond through the magazine. Through contributions and book reviews was the market of the illustrated book as well as the scientific resonance examined more closely. Illustration 63 functioned then and still today as a reference work , treasure trove and source of news for everyone who loves the beautifully illustrated book.

Since there are no reviews in the press , radio or television for illustrated books and press prints (if so, then only in unprominent places) , Illustration 63 has established itself as the primary source of information when it comes to new publications in this field. This is done, among other things, via the enclosed brochures from publishers who have book art in their program . Since the magazine Illustration 63 met with very positive reactions in the professional world , Curt Visel soon expanded his publishing program to include artist monographs , original graphic calendars , portfolios and reprints, and finally in 1973 the second graphic art magazine . Both magazines build bridges between artists and art lovers. Jürgen Schweitzer has been the owner of Edition Curt Visel since the beginning of 2002.

Further advertising media for book illustration

Occasionally one finds reviews of illustrated books in the lobby of the book friends or in the newsletter of the Society of Bibliophiles and in the marginalia of the Pirckheimer Society . The philosophy of the Maximiliangesellschaft records at least most of the new publications bibliographically . For publishers and press printers, accompanying documents from the bibliophile institutions together with Illustration 63 and the compendium of contemporary hand press prints FORUM BOOK ART , by Heinz Bartkowiak from Hamburg , represent the only advertising option.

The publishers and presses made use of these organs for beautiful books, as they were an important way of getting to the addresses of members of the bibliophile societies, especially for younger companies, in addition to participating in the Frankfurt Book Fair or exhibitions .
