The LKM N4 was a standard gauge diesel locomotive , which was specially designed for works and connecting railways. It was built in the Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg (LKM).
history
The locomotive was a further development of the Orenstein & Koppel locomotives RL7 and RL8. It shows very strong technical similarities with the small locomotives of performance group II of the DR . Her successor was the LKM series LKM V 10 B .
The locomotives were delivered to the States of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and the People's Republic of China . They were also used by many industrial companies in the GDR.
variants
The sub-variants of the N4 were distinguished by adding letters. N4 (no addition) means: standard gauge without compressed air brakes, N4a: 1524 mm wide gauge with heated driver's cab, N4b: standard gauge with compressed air brakes, N4c: standard gauge for air brakes.
A number of N4s were converted into electric tow vehicles (ESF) in the GDR and used specifically at loading facilities.
The narrow-gauge variant was called Ns4 , and sub-variants were also distinguished by adding letters. Ns4 means: narrow gauge 600–1000 mm and Ns4a: narrow gauge 600-760 mm in tropical version. Ns4 locomotives were manufactured as C-couplers.
