La Grande Librairie (French: "the big bookstore", abbreviated: LGL ) is the most important literary program on French television . It has been moderated by the French literary critic and journalist François Busnel since 2008 .
The program usually lasts 90 minutes and is broadcast live on the education channel France 5 in prime time on Wednesday evenings . After that it is in the library of France Télévisions available. It is also taken over by TV5 Monde . In the studio there are usually four writers in front of an audience , who tell and discuss their works. There are irregular special programs that are only devoted to one topic. La Grande Librairie is seen by up to 600,000 viewers per broadcast.
La Grande Librairie has a similar significance for literary life in France as the program Apostrophes at the time , the formerly dominant literary-critical talk show , which was hosted by Bernard Pivot from 1975 to 1990 . It served as a model for The Literary Quartet under Marcel Reich-Ranicki . Both moderators had achieved the rank of “ literature popes ” in their day and had a great influence on the book market. This role is now also attributed to La Grande Librairie by the industry journal Livres Hebdo .
