La Monumental [ ɫə munuməntaɫ ] (full name in Catalan Plaça de Braus de la monumental or on Spanish Plaza de toros Monumental de Barcelona , originally El Sport called) is a Opened in 1914 and in 1916 expanded bullfighting - Arena in the capital of Catalonia Barcelona .

Located at the junction of Gran Via and Carrer de la Marina in the Eixample district, it offers space for 19,582 spectators in 26 rows, all of which are covered from the first tier onwards. The style of the building can be described as a late example of Modernisme with Neo-Mudejar influences. The architect of the original building was Manuel Joaquim Raspall i Mayol , the Mudéjar-style extension was designed by Ignasi Mas i Morell , together with Domènec Sugrañes i Gras .

It was the last bullring in Catalonia where corridas were still held. The last bullfight took place there on September 25, 2011. Following a referendum, the Catalan regional parliament banned further bullfights on July 28, 2010. Music events and circus performances are planned as future uses. In June 2014 it was rumored that the emir of Qatar would spend more than two billion euros to buy the arena and convert it into the third largest mosque in the world.

The likes of the Beatles (1965), the Rolling Stones (1976), Bob Marley (1980), Tina Turner (1990), Dire Straits (1992) and Bruce Springsteen (1992) have performed in the past .

One of the famous bullfighters in this arena, which, along with Las Ventas in Madrid and la Maestranza in Seville, is the most important in Spain, was José Tomás .
