As labialisation (even lip rounding or just rounding ) is referred to in the phonetics both the process of secondary articulation and the on lip rounding receding sound change (see diachrony ). The rounded front tongue vowels of the New High German language were created through labialization. The Middle High German word leffel became spoon .

In the languages ​​of the Caucasus , the labialization of consonants has a distinguishing function.

In the International Phonetic Alphabet the labialization is a consonant by the suffix letter superscript w [⁠ ʷ ⁠] labeled.

Other types of secondary articulation are: palatalization , velarization , laryngealization , glottalization and pharyngealization .
