Commitment against female genital mutilation

As a member of the European Parliament and beyond, Uca worked together with the women's rights organization Terre des Femmes to fight against practices of female genital mutilation .

She commissioned the organization to create a publication in 2005 with the title “Study on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)”. The content of this work includes information on the dissemination and socio-cultural background of the practice, an overview of the legal situation in Africa and Europe, the presentation of previous solutions and recommendations for joint engagement at European level.

In December 2005 and January 2006 Uca solicited donations for the Terre des Femmes supported project Network Against Female Genital Mutilation (NAFGEM), which works for the abolition of female genital mutilation in Tanzania .

On the occasion of the International Day “Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation” Uca declared in February 2008 that female genital mutilation is an “extreme form of violence against women and girls”. In twenty-eight African countries this “particularly extreme form of violence” is used to control the female body. It is "our task" to fight against this "human rights violation, in which the girls are inflicted lifelong physical and mental wounds". However, the “power of patriarchal structures and established traditions” must be taken into account: Good aid programs ensure that the people affected decided against the rite of genital mutilation out of conviction and instead looked for “alternative practices” that “took care of the female body Protect integrity ”. A change of heart can never be imposed from the outside, but must happen through awareness raising, education and medical training. Education enables girls to know their rights and to question their role in society. The main task of development programs in this regard is the “promotion of reproductive health” and the protection and strengthening of women's rights worldwide.

In March 2008, together with spokespersons for the feminist women's working group LISA and a representative from Terre des Femmes, Uca condemned the comparison of injuries caused by genital mutilation with potential injuries in daycare , which Christa Müller , the left-wing spokesperson for family policy and chairwoman of the anti-circumcision-critical association , Christa Müller , previously reported in did a Spiegel interview.

In March 2010 the Feleknas Uca Foundation organized a reading with the Somali author Fadumo Korn in cooperation with the Celler Frauenhaus eV and Terre des Femmes .

After an interrogation, she was expelled to Germany.

In July 2018, investigations into organizational propaganda were initiated against Uca for allegedly attending the funeral of a PKK fighter.
