Labotas (Sparta)

Labotas or Leobotes ( Greek Λαβώτας, Λεωβώτης Labotas, Leōbṓtēs ) is in Greek mythology the son of Echestratus and the fourth king of Sparta from the House of Agiaden .

Since he was still very young when his father died, Lykurg , his father's brother , initially ran the affairs of state as the guardian of Labotas. During this time, Herodotus reports , Lycurgus is said to have enacted the first reasonable constitution and good laws. Pausanias says that this only happened during the reign of Agesilaus I. When Labotas came of age, he took over the government.

Labotas waged war against the Argives because they had occupied Kynouria and allegedly incited the Periöks living in the surrounding area .

After Hieronymus and the Excerpta Latina Barbari , he ruled for 37 years. After his death, his son Doryssus ascended the throne.
