The lacquer Cistus ( Cistus ladanifer ) is a plant type from the genus of cistus (Cistus) in the family of rockrose (Cistaceae).

features

The resinous-aromatic smelling, sparsely branched shrub is strongly glandular and sticky and reaches heights of growth of up to 250 cm. The leaves are up to 10 cm long and about 2.5 cm wide and are arranged opposite one another and almost sitting. They are linear-lanceolate in shape. They are hairy white on the underside, and on the top they are bald, dark green in color and shiny.

The flowers are solitary and measure about 7 to 10 cm in diameter. The three sepals are ciliate on the edge and glandular-sticky. The five petals are white and often yellow with dark purple spots at the base. The spherical capsule fruit is six to tenfaced.

Flowering time is from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The lacquer rockrose is widespread in the western Mediterranean on the Iberian Peninsula, in France and in northwest Africa. This species was introduced to the Canary Islands.

Macchia , light open forests and lime-free, acidic soils are preferred as locations .

Systematics

There are three subspecies:

  • Cistus ladanifer L. subsp. ladanifer : It occurs in the Canary Islands, Portugal, Spain and France.
  • Cistus ladanifer L. subsp. mauritianus Pau & Sennen (Syn .: Cistus ladanifer subsp. africanus Dans. ): It occurs in Morocco, Algeria and Spain.
  • Cistus ladanifer L. subsp. sulcatus (Demoly) P. Monts. (Syn .: Cistus palhinhae Ingram ): It occurs in Portugal.

Others

The botanical name suggests that this species also produces the resin Ladanum .
