Lady Frere is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the administrative seat of the municipality Emalahleni and is located in the Chris Hani district .

In 2011 Lady Frere had 2510 inhabitants (census). Most of the residents speak isiXhosa . Nearby cities are Queenstown 51 kilometers southwest and Cala 53 kilometers northeast.
history
The region around the later Lady Frere was called the Tambookie Location from 1853 . The place was founded in 1879 - after the end of the border wars - and named after the wife of the then governor of the Cape Colony , Henry Bartle Frere . The region was later assigned to the Transkei and referred to as the Glen Gray District . This was later renamed the Cacadu District after the nearby river . In 1900 the place received parish status. From 1974 Lady Frere belonged to the Ciskei , although it was not in the actual homeland area . In 1994 it became part of the newly established Eastern Cape Province.

The city is on the R410 trunk road that connects Lady Frere with Queenstown and Cala.
