The Lagan ( Irish An Lagáin ; in ancient Logia ) is a river in Northern Ireland .
It has its source on Slieve Croob in the mountains of County Down and flows about 60 km via Dromara , Dromore , Moira and Lisburn to Belfast . There it flows into the Belfast Lough (Bay of Belfast).
Tributaries are the Ravernet , the Carryduff, and the Farset . In 1994 a weir was built in Belfast, the Lagan Weir , to keep the water level constant. From here the river becomes an estuary .
In both Lisburn and Belfast, the city center has been upgraded by rebuilding the Lagan embankment. To this end, the Laganside Corporation was founded in Belfast in 1989 . Among other things, the Waterfront Hall , the largest concert hall in Northern Ireland with 2,250 seats, opened in 2001, and the Odyssey Arena , a multi-purpose hall.
Both the Queen's University Belfast Boat Club and other clubs practice water sports on the Lagan.
