Lago Boracifero is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Monterotondo Marittimo in the province of Grosseto in Tuscany .

geography

The place is about 4 kilometers west of the main town Monterotondo Marittimo, about 50 km northwest of the provincial capital Grosseto and about 75 km southwest of the regional capital Florence in the mountain range of the Colline Metallifere . The place is at 208  m slm and 2001 had 51 inhabitants. In 2011 there were 35 residents. The Cornia River flows about 1.5 km northwest. Fumaroles are characteristic of the area .

history

The place arose in the 19th century as a workers' settlement, when François Jacques de Larderel settled here from 1827 on a company for the mining of borax , which gives the place its name (Italian: Borace ). The geothermal systems of the place are now owned by Enel .

Attractions

  • Madonna di Montenero , church in the Località Fattoria del Lago approx. 500 m southeast of the town, was built in 1853 on the initiative of Francesco di Larderel. Contains on the vault the work Gloria di San Francesco by an unknown artist from the 19th century.
  • Lago Boracifero , (formerly also Lago Sulfureo or Lago dell'EdIERTio ), local lake.
