Lagos ( Greek Λάγος ( m. Sg. ) Formerly known as Porto Lagos (Πόρτο Λάγος ( n. Sg. )) Or port Lagos known Turkish Karaağaç , Bulgarian Карагач Karagatch even Порто Лагос Porto Lagos ) is a village in the municipality of Avdira in the Greek region of East Macedonia and Thrace .

Place and surroundings

Lagos is located on a canal that connects the Aegean Sea with Lake Vistonida . There is an information center in the village that provides information about the surrounding species-rich lagoon landscape. In the middle of the Lagos lagoon to the east lies the Byzantine church Ágios Nikólaos, which is connected to the land by a dam.

Political history

Transport links around 1910
Porto Lagos, ca.1940

From 1878 to 1912 the village belonged to the Sandschak Gümülcine in the Vilayet Edirne . Like the port of Alexandroupoli , 100 kilometers further east, Lagos was Bulgarian from 1912 to 1920 . A direct rail link from Sofia through the Rhodope Mountains was to make Lagos the second Aegean port in Bulgaria and the construction of the railways and ports should be financed by the German Disconto-Gesellschaft in accordance with the Porto-Lagos Treaty of 1915 . The planning of this imaginary as a safe route parallel route was abandoned when the route of the railway line from the north to the then Bulgarian Дедеагач Dedeagatsch hot end Alexandroupoli, who had previously performed or in part, on Ottoman territory in August 1915 completely fell to Bulgaria.

Postal history

Postage stamp from 1893

While it was part of the Ottoman Empire , a French mail steamer agency received a postal concession for Lagos. They operated a post office from 1874–1875 and 1880–1898 using overprinted French postage stamps.
