The Laguna de Gallocanta ( Aragonese : Lacuna de Gallocanta ) is one of the largest lakes in Spain in the autonomous region of Aragon and one of the largest wintering areas for the European gray crane . The inland lake is characterized by a strongly fluctuating water level, depending on the rainfall. Located at 995 meters above sea level, it reaches 7.7 km in length, 2.8 km in width and 1.5 m in depth, with an area of over 14 km². The drainless depression is located on the border with the province of Saragossa near the province of Guadalajara between the sierras of Santa Cruz and Pardos in the north, the Sierra Menera in the south and the Sierra del Caldereros in the east. The eponymous place Gallocanta is at the northern end of the lagoon.
The resting cranes reached a maximum of 35,790 in winter 2008/2009. The lagoon has been subject to the Ramsar Convention since 1995 and is also a national nature reserve . The birds find food in the surrounding corn and sunflower fields.
The Laguna de Gallocanta largely belongs to the municipalities of Gallocanta (northwest) and Berrueco (northeast) as well as, with a small proportion, Las Cuerlas (southwest) of Campo de Daroca , a comarca of the province of Zaragoza . The southeastern part, however, belongs to the municipality of Bello , Comarca del Jiloca , Province of Teruel .
