The Lahnbrücke Runkel is a bridge built in 1448 over the Lahn in Runkel in the Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg . Above the bridge is Runkel Castle, and Schadeck Castle is near the bridge . The bridge has only been of local traffic significance since a new bridge was built downstream in 1978.

Appearance

The Lahn Bridge has four segment arches. The clear width of the arches, seen in the picture from the right, is 13.80 meters, 15.51 meters, 15.91 meters and 14.69 meters. The pillar width is 5.65 meters for the right, 4.53 meters for the middle and 4.56 meters for the left pillar. A weir runs under the third arch .

history

Dietrich IV von Runkel began building the Lahn Bridge in 1440. The bridge had bridge towers and a drawbridge. The Schadeck lord of the castle, Reinhard von Westerburg , saw the building as a "castle building" and in it a contradiction to a contract concluded in 1288. A two-year feud broke out, which was ended by a truce. In 1448 a contract was signed with which both gentlemen decided to build and use the bridge together.

In the following centuries the bridge was damaged several times, but never completely destroyed. In 1815 the bridge tower was demolished. In the course of making the Lahn navigable, the bridge was rebuilt in 1841/42 and a lock was built on the bridge.

The bridge survived the Second World War unscathed. With the construction of a new bridge in Runkel in 1978, the Lahn bridge lost its traffic significance.

In addition to being a listed building, the castle has been given the status of war protection under the Hague Convention .
