Laila Stien
Laila Stien (born May 16, 1946 in Hemnes , Norway ) is a Norwegian writer .
Life
Laila Stien grew up in Rana . She studied ethnology , Sami languages and social anthropology at the University of Oslo . She then moved to Finnmark . She made her debut as a writer in 1979 with the Nyveien short story collection . With Vekselsang she wrote her only novel to date. Stien mainly focused on short stories, children's books and translations of Sami writers, including Synnøve Persen , Rauni Magga Lukkari and Nils-Aslak Valkeapää .
She had great success with her children's book Å plukke en smørblomst , published in 1993 . In the same year it was awarded the Critics' Prize for the best children's and youth book of the year. After a translation by Gabriele Haefs , it was published in 1998 under the German title How do I pick a buttercup? at the Sauerländer Verlag. A second edition was published in 2005 by Carlsen Verlag .
For her novella Gjennom glass , published in 1999 , Stien was awarded the Havmann Prize and the Aschehoug Literature Prize the following year .
Stien is married to an editor. Their son is the motorcross driver Ailo Gaup .
