Laird Howard Barber (born October 25, 1848 in Mifflinburg , Pennsylvania , †  February 16, 1928 in Mauch Chunk , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Laird Barber attended the Mifflinburg Academy and then until 1871 Lafayette College in Easton . Between 1875 and 1880 he worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1881, he began to work in this profession in Mauch Chunk, today's Jim Thorpe. There he also became chairman and calculator of the school committee in 1890. He was also the secretary of the local council. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1898 Barber was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican William Sebring Kirkpatrick on March 4, 1899 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1900, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1901 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Barber initially practiced as a lawyer again. From 1913 he was presiding judge in the 56th judicial district of his state. He held this office until his death on February 16, 1928.
