Jim Thorpe is a borough and county seat of Carbon County in the US state of Pennsylvania . In 2000 Jim Thorpe had 4,804 residents; by the official estimate in 2009, the population had increased to 4,883.

The municipality has a size of 38.3 km².

history

Founded in 1818 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company as Mauch Chunk, the site quickly became a rail and coal shipping center. In 1876 the city was the site of the trial of Molly Maguires , which resulted in the hanging of four people convicted of murder.

When the parishes of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged soon after the death of Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe in 1953 , they took his name in hopes of attracting tourists and stimulating the economy. The community is also known as Switzerland of America . It got its nickname because of the picturesque landscape, the mountain location and its architecture.

Demographic data

At the last official census in 2000 , Jim Thorpe had 4,804 residents in 1,967 households and 1,335 families. The population was composed of 98.36% white, 0.62% black and 0.27% Asian. Hispanics or Latinos made up 0.83% of the population. The per capita income was $ 17,119 and 7.8% of families and 10.0% of the population were below the poverty line .
