The Lake Buchanan is a shallow salt lake in the Pentland in northern Queensland of Australia. It's in the Barkly Tableland . It is about 28 km long and at its widest point 8 km wide with a total of 117 km². It belongs to the Thomson River catchment area and is part of the Desert Uplands Bioregion . The lake differs from all other salt lakes in Australia in that it is very high in the Great Dividing Range . It is not very deep and the water is slightly salty. There is grassland around the lake. On average, 60 mm of rain falls per year. The lake was named after the discoverer Nathaniel Buchanan .
The lake is home to a number of significant species that have recently been discovered and are likely endemic . Little bearded dragons live around the lake .
