The Lake Murphy is a lake in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located around 400 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 245 kilometers southwest of Gladstone . Not far from the lake is the Murphy Range . The name of the lake goes back to the Prussian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt .

Naming

The name Murphy was given by Ludwig Leichhardt at the end of 1844 when he invaded this area on his first Australian expedition. He chose fifteen-year-old John Murphy, the youngest participant in his first expedition to Australia between 1844 and 1845.

description

The lake is still in the same condition as it was when it was discovered around 170 years ago, as it has not been greatly changed by human hands or natural events. This naturalness makes it a seasonal refuge for waterfowl , which is why the Lake Murphy Conservation Park was established.

Lake Murphy is a perched lake , which means that it is isolated from the groundwater by a layer of rock . It only carries water when the nearby Robinson Creek overflows its banks (which flows into the Dawson River via Palm Tree Creek ). It has completely dried up five times in the past two centuries.

The lake can be reached via the Leichhardt Highway , which leads to Brisbane or Gladstone via Warrego or Dawson Highway .
