Lake St. Joseph is a lake on the border of the two districts of Thunder Bay and Kenora in the Canadian province of Ontario .

The originally 364 km² large lake was dammed in 1936 with the construction of the Rat Rapids Dam and the Cedars Channel Dams . The water area is now 459 km², the total area including islands is 493 km². Due to the fluctuations in the water level in the dammed lake, the water surface can vary greatly. In addition, the Root River Dam (Lake St. Joseph Diversion Dam) was built at the western end of the lake , which makes it possible to divert water to the south-west Lac Seul .

The Albany River forms the outflow of the lake at its eastern end to neighboring Osnaburgh Lake . The most important tributary of Lake St. Joseph is the Cat River . This drains a northwestern lake system and flows into the lake with two branches of the river on the northwestern bank.

The lake is accessible from Ignace via Ontario Highway 599 . The road leads past the east bank of the lake to Pickle Lake, 35 km northeast of the lake .

The following types of fish are caught in Lake St. Joseph: Eyeglasses , Canadian pikeperch , largemouth bass , black bass , pike , muscle lung , American river perch , American char , herring vendace and sea sturgeon .
