Evangelical Church Biebesheim am Rhein
The Protestant parish church is a listed church building in Biebesheim am Rhein in the Groß-Gerau district ( Hesse ).
History and architecture
A previous building was first mentioned in a document in 1209, when there was talk of a church in need of repair. For a long time, the income was due to the von Wolfskehlen gentlemen, who also had the right to appoint the pastor. The church burned to the ground on August 5, 1635, and General Gallas and the imperial troops set fire to Biebesheim. In the years 1659 to 1665 a church was built again. which was inaugurated on May 15, 1665. In 1686 the church got a tower , which was built on the preserved medieval substructure. An organ was built in 1701. The building was demolished in 1770.
A new nave of the church formerly dedicated to St. Nicholas was built from 1770 to 1773 under the direction of Joh. Martin Schuhknecht. The late Gothic west tower is crowned with a baroque hood . The large hall with corner pilasters closes on three sides. Most of the furnishings date from the 18th century. The pulpit and the organ are on the side of the altar. The organ, built in 1834 by Bernhard Dreymann from Mainz, was completely overhauled in 1995. It is equipped with around 1700 pipes . The original bronze bells were melted down during the war. New bells were cast in 1958. The walls are divided by colored windows. Some of these were destroyed in bombing raids , and the two Luther windows were created from the remains in 1949. Missing colored windows were used in 1995 and at the same time all windows were fitted with pre-glazing.
