Lakhdaria ( Arabic الأخضرية; Central Atlas Tamazight ⵍⴻⵅⴹⴰⵔⴻⵢⵢⴰ Lexḍareyya ) is a northern Algerian city with approx. 50,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (commune) consisting of several villages with a total of approx. 70,000 inhabitants in the province of Bouira . Lakhdaria is a major city in Kabylia .
Toponym
The place has been called Palestro since it was founded in 1869 and was renamed after the independence of Algeria (1962) after a fallen freedom fighter who carried the war name Si Lakhdar .
Location and climate
The town of Lakhdaria is located in a valley of the Tell Atlas mountains through which the Oued Isser flows at an altitude of approx. 150 to 180 m . The city has a motorway connection and a train station on the routes to the main city of Algiers, about 70 km northwest . The climate is mostly temperate to warm; the rain, which is abundant by Algerian standards (approx. 710 mm / year), falls mainly in the winter months.

Since the 1960s, Lakhdaria has experienced a strong immigration of families from the rural regions of Algeria.
economy
Agriculture in the area is mainly characterized by grain and oil production; the livestock that is still in operation mostly takes place in stables. Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city itself.
history
There are small finds from prehistoric and Roman times , from which, however, no permanent settlement can be concluded. Under the rule of the Ottomans (from 1554) the place inhabited by Berbers was a fortified outpost of the army. From 1830 to 1962 Palestro was part of the French colony of Algeria . Between 1992 and 2000, Lakhdaria was the scene of several attacks by the Groupe Islamique Armé .
