Lakolk is a tourist town on the west side of the Danish island of Rømø . The place, located on sand dunes , is the oldest holiday resort on the island and has been a destination for summer guests since 1898 at the latest. Today it consists of a large number of holiday homes, a hotel, a campsite and a large shopping center.

history

Individual holiday huts had existed since 1895. Three years later, pastor Johannes Jacobsen from Scherrebek founded the North Sea resort of Lakolk, which was then part of Germany, for German bathers. In the first season there were only two single-family houses and two barracks with four rooms, about 200 guests visited the place. Numerous buildings and around 40 log houses were erected over the next few years. However, the pastor's company went bankrupt in 1903, and so did his North Sea resort. The success he had hoped for did not materialize, however, and tourism on Rømø only began in 1948 with the opening of Rømødæmningen (Rømø Dam).

From 1899 to 1940 Lakolk was the western terminus of the 3.8 kilometer long island railway Rømø from Kongsmark .
