Lambaréné (customary French spelling; in German mostly Lambarene ) is the capital of the province of Moyen-Ogooué in Gabon . The name comes from the language of the Galoa , an ethnic group of Gabon, and means "We want to try". The city, which had around 26,257 inhabitants in 2009, is located just a few kilometers south of the equator in the middle of the Central African rainforest on the Ogooué River . Lambaréné is also the economic center of the Moyen-Ogooué province. The main industry is fishing. A new port is under construction.
Today, various Bantu groups ( Fang , Bapounou, Eshira, Myéné and others) live in Lambaréné and have displaced the originally resident pygmies to the east and north of Gabon.
Districts
The Ogooué splits in Lambaréné into two river arms, whereby the city is divided into three areas: Rive Gauche ("left bank"), Rive Droite ("right bank") and Île Lambaréné (Lambaréné island).
The Cartier Isaac is located on the Rive Gauche . This is also where the airport is located, which is hardly used any more due to the good road connection with Libreville (in the north) and Fougamou or Mouila (in the south) and the water connection with Port-Gentil (in the west). Districts on Rive Droite are Adouma and Abongo . The districts of Atongowanga, Sahoty, Dakar, Grand Village, Château, Lalala and Bordamur are located on Lambaréné Island .
Albert Schweitzer Hospital
The later Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer founded his famous jungle hospital here in 1913 in what was then French Equatorial Africa , which is located on Rive Droite. Today the Albert Schweitzer Hospital houses the departments for internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics (child and adolescent medicine), a maternity clinic, a dental clinic and, since 1981, a research laboratory that focuses primarily on research into tropical malaria and its treatment the studies to the middle RTS, S was involved.
