Lamiya Aji Bashar (2017)

Lamiya Aji Bashar ( Arabic لمياء حجي بشار, DMG Lamia Ḥāǧī Bazaar , Kurmanji Lamia Haci Beşar , born about 1998 in Kocho in Sinjar , Iraq ) is an Iraqi- Yezidi human rights activist. She was awarded the Sakharov Prize in 2016.

In 2014 Amnesty International reported on ethnic cleansing in northern Iraq by the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). Kocho, the birthplace of Lamiya Aji Bashar, was badly affected by the attacks. A large number of the male residents were picked up, removed and shot in August 2014. IS fighters kidnapped several women, including the then 16-year-old Lamiya Aji Bashar and Nadia Murad . The women were mistreated, sexually abused, beaten, enslaved and sold several times by the IS. Lamiya Aji Bashar was also forced to make explosive vests.

Supported by her family, who hired and paid local smugglers, she escaped together with two other young women in April 2016. One of the women stepped on a land mine , causing Lamiya Aji Bashar to almost completely lose her sight. Her two companions were killed. She later came to Germany, where she received a visa for medical treatment in Baden-Württemberg. Since then, Lamiya Aji Bashar and Nadia Murad have stood up for the approximately 3,000 Yazidi women who are still under the control of IS. Lamiya Aji Bashar lives in a secret location in southern Germany.

On October 27, 2016, both women were awarded the Sakharov Prize, which they were awarded on December 13, 2016.
