Landmark Peak is a very distinctive 1,840 m high peak in the West Antarctic Heritage Range , the southern part of the Ellsworth Mountains . It is located about 9 kilometers south of the Minnesota Glacier , on the eastern side of the Gowan Glacier .
Landmark Peak got its name from a University of Minnesota geological expedition that explored the area in the summer of 1963/64. They called it Landmark (in German about landmark , orientation point) because the summit is an often used landmark for pilots in this area.
