The Khost-Gardez-Pass , also known in the Seti-Kandow Pass region or abbreviated as KG Pass , is the main connection between Chost and Gardez , the capital of the Afghan province of Paktia . The pass is partly unpaved and partly asphalted.

history

The 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of the US Navy during Operation Enduring Freedom on the Khost-Gardez Pass on December 30, 2004

The Khost Gardez Pass has been used since ancient times when it enabled the connection from Kabul to India . During the Soviet occupation, mujahideen frequently attacked Soviet convoys on this route. The pass road was partially asphalted and repaired with funds from a German development project from 1965. This work was abandoned in 1979 with the Soviet occupation.

geography

The road to the Khost-Gardez-Pass begins at an altitude of about 2,300 m in the valley of the Gardez River and rises to a top of about 4000 m. The pass passes through numerous administrative and tribal areas, such as those of the Swak , Gerda Serai and Waze Zadran in Paktia and Besmil in Chost. The Zadran tribe is the dominant Pashtun tribe living in the area of this pass.

The pass is in an arid climate in which only bushes and small trees grow. In winter, the pass is not passable due to heavy snow.

From Pakistan , the Peiwar Pass leads to Gardez and via the Khost-Gardez Pass to Chost. From there the road continues to Kabul. This route is the shortest route from Kabul to Pakistan.

safety

Security in the pass region is problematic and attacks by militant forces are to be expected. Coalition soldiers, Afghan armed forces and civilians were attacked and murdered. The Afghan security forces and the coalition have set up a Salerno outpost for the safety of travelers not far from the pass.
