Chost (also Khowst , Pashto / Dari :خوست, DMG Ḫawst ) is a city in eastern Afghanistan and at the same time the capital of the province of Khost , a mountainous region near the border with Pakistan .

history

During the Soviet intervention in the 1980s, the city was under siege for more than eight years . The airfield with its 2,700 meter long runway served as the base for helicopter operations by the Soviet Army. The American armed forces have been using the airfield during the Afghanistan war since May 2007 .

On August 20, 1998, the United States government, under President Bill Clinton, shot several cruise missiles at targets near the city of Khost . The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) went, shortly after the terrorist attacks on the United States embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi assume that in the suspected terrorist training camps of Osama bin Laden are would.

On February 18, 2011, a suicide bomber blew himself up on the market square. 8 people died and 18 were injured.

On June 20, 2012, a suicide bomber blew himself up on a motorcycle in the market square. The aim was a joint patrol by NATO and Afghan forces. At least 17 people were killed and 37 others injured in the attack. On May 27, 2017, there was an bomb attack. At least 18 people were killed.
