Langton Matravers is a small village on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the county of Dorset in the south of England . The first Langton Matravers parish council was elected in 1894.

location

Langton Matravers is located about 2 kilometers directly west of Swanage and about 6 kilometers southeast of Corfe Castle and Corfe Castle . The village is located on a hill not far from the cliffs at Dancing Ledge on the English Channel coast .

history

The name Langton comes from the words "long town" and the name Matravers comes first from the Lord Mautravers, who once lived there, and finally came from the French mal traverse .

The village had a population of 973 in 2001, up from 773 in 1991. The village is a popular tourist destination and 16.9% of the households in the village are second homes.

Langton Matravers Museum is behind the parish church of St. George in the center of the village. There is easy access for wheelchairs. The Langton Matravers Museum has a gift shop with many speculations including etched and polished stones, as well as books on Langton Matravers and the stone industry. Purbeck marble has been used for the walls, ceilings and floors of buildings from Roman times to the present day, from the most humble houses to the largest cathedrals. The lower layers of the Purbeck stone are mostly used as permanent building blocks or as roof panels. All layers were used for all aspects of the construction. His story is shown here in a former coach house ( Remise ). The museum, together with the village itself, is a historical example of the ongoing use of the stone. The museum provides a full overview of the ways in which the local stone is mined and used. The total number of exhibits is around 25,000.

The village is home to St. George's School, which was founded at the end of the 19th century. Next door is the Old Malthouse , a preparatory school for boys and girls founded in 1906 but closed in 2007. Another preparatory school, Durnford School (opened in 1894), was located in Durnford House, this was also recently closed. The writer Ian Fleming (James Bond) went to school there.

The village has two campsites that are very popular with tourists: Tom's Field Camping and Acton Field.
