Former Himmelsteich , ( open pit mine ) |
The Lanzenweiher was a groundwater lake in the Middle Franconian town of Röthenbach near Sankt Wolfgang ( market town of Wendelstein ).
location
The body of water was to the west of Röthenbach, north of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal , between the canal and the Feucht – Wendelstein railway line , around today's street In der Lach . It was mainly used as a swimming lake.
history
In the 19th century, massive stone quarrying on castle sandstone of the Löwenstein Formation was carried out in the area, a southern branch of the Fischleinsberg . There was also considerable digging into the depths. The groundwater there was relatively high, hence the name Lach , which is why the abandoned quarry quickly filled with water. From the time between 1909 and the First World War , shipping there is also documented with simple wooden barges.
According to contemporary witness reports, the pond was filled with rubble in 1957.
The pond was very popular as a bathing lake. Many bathers also came from nearby Nuremberg . The main beach was in the east. The shallow shore zone consisted of sand, with sandstone underneath . The pond was also called Lake Lucerne by the locals based on the much larger Swiss original .
Today there is an industrial and agricultural area in the area of the pond. The street Lanzenweiher is reminiscent of the water.
