Laothoe is a genus within the butterfly family of swarmers (Sphingidae). The genus has its distribution in the Palearctic .

features

The moths are very similar to those of the genus Smerinthus , but have broad hind wings that are indented between the veins R1 and Sc + R1 and have a lobed bulge at the veins Rs and M1. The hind wings have no eye spots and the anal angle is strongly rounded. The males have no frenulum , the females have a reduced one. The retinaculum is absent in both sexes. The proboscis is stunted. The antennae of the males are less combed than in the evening peacock butterfly ( Smerinthus ocellatus ), but have long hairs. The last segment is short. The abdomen is covered with soft thorns everywhere on the tergites , especially very close to and around the apical corners of the tergites. The thorns are covered with long scales . The tibia have no thorns.

The eggs are almost spherical, pale green and relatively large in relation to the butterflies.

The caterpillars are typical of swarmers and very similar to those of the genus Smerinthus . However, their bodies are stockier and they have a smaller anal horn .

The pupae are matt black or dark brown in color and, unlike the genus Smerinthus, have a rough surface. The cremaster is short and flattened dorso-ventrally. Its base is wide, the end tapers to a point.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on trees and shrubs from the willow family (Salicaceae).

Systematics

In Europe , the genus Laothoe is represented by two species, seven species of the genus are known worldwide, of which Laothoe habeli was first described in 2010. Both Pittaway and Kitching regard Laothoe populetorum (Staudinger, 1887) not as a separate species, but as a subspecies of Laothoe populi .
