LAPP Insulators is a leading global manufacturer of insulators for all voltage and especially high voltage ranges. The company has plants in Wunsiedel, Germany, Redwitz, Germany, ( Jedlina-Zdrój ), Poland, Turda , Romania, Le Roy (New York) , USA and a joint venture in China ( Dalian ). The research and development departments as well as the largest plants of the group are located in Germany ( Wunsiedel and Redwitz an der Rodach ). In addition, there is a high-voltage laboratory established in Selb in 1930 .

Today Lapp Insulators is one of the largest suppliers of high-voltage insulators worldwide.

history

LAPP Insulators Germany and the production of high-voltage insulators have their origins in the Upper Franconian, Thuringian and Silesian regions. Insulator production developed as a result of the onset of electrification at the end of the 19th century by various porcelain and ceramic manufacturers in the region. The Le Roy / NY, USA location was founded in 1916 by John Lapp.

The Wunsiedel location has its origins on the one hand in a factory founded in 1901 (from 1921 Steatit Magnesia AG) in Wunsiedel and on the other hand in the porcelain manufactory Rosenthal / Rosenthal AG from Selb, founded in 1889 . They were favored by the emergence of raw materials necessary for the production of porcelain, such as soapstone in the Johanneszeche in Göpfersgrün near Wunsiedel.

The competing companies quickly gained leading positions in the market and acquired extensive knowledge in the manufacture of ceramic insulators. In 1967, the now combined company presented the first self-developed and patented composite insulators (Rodurflex) to the world. During the 1980s and 1990s, the know-how and production of high-voltage insulators were fully concentrated on the Wunsiedel-Holenbrunn location.

In 2001, the then high-voltage insulators division of CeramTec AG was taken over by the American LAPP-Insulators group (headquarters in Le Roy, New York State).

The insulator division and aluminum division , which originated from Redwitz and originally from Siemens , have been part of the company since 2008 . The Redwitz location had its beginnings in Neuhaus (district of Sonneberg) until the plant there was expropriated after the Second World War . As a replacement, Siemens built a new isolator factory in Redwitz. Lapp Insulators also acquired plants in Poland and Romania with the purchase of the isolator and alumina division of the company that was last trading as Argillon .

After another change of ownership in 2011, the headquarters of the Lapp Insulators Group were relocated to Wunsiedel. In 2015, Pfisterer took over the company .

Products

The product range includes isolators of all voltage ranges. In Germany and the USA, high-quality high-voltage insulators up to 1100 kV are made from ceramic and plastic (silicone). In Poland one produces insulators for the low and medium voltage areas. In Romania, Lapp Insulators produces hollow and solid insulators for voltage levels up to 420 kV. The product range includes insulators for all typical areas of application such as high-voltage lines, switchgear, antennas and also for the electrification of railway lines.

In the aluminum sector, screw and disk housings, for example for thyristors, are made from aluminum oxide.
