Under Lapphund ( Finnish : Lapinkoira ; Lapin : Lappish , koira : domestic dog ) are determined by the FCI in the 3 FCI group 5, section three breeds from northern Fennoscandia performed.

The Lapphunds presumably evolved from the local Nordic tip type hunting dogs a long time ago. The development is closely related to the domestication of the reindeer , for this purpose a climate-adapted, independently working herding dog was needed. The three breeds of Lapphund are:

Although they are similar to one another, these breeds must not be mated together. The stud books are still open for all three , which means that new dogs typical of the breed can still be entered.

When dogs of the Lapinkoira breed are mentioned, they usually refer to the Finnish Lapphund. This breed was given the name Lapinkoira in 1967 and was only given the current name Suomenlapinkoira in 1993.
